Multiple Imaging Reduction Policy
Multiple Imaging Reduction Policy change in reduction percent

As stated in the January 2006 Network Bulletin, effective June 2006, UnitedHealthcare will implement a new reimbursement policy to apply a reduction to the technical component of imaging procedures when multiple images from the same Diagnostic Imaging Services family are acquired during a single patient session. (Please refer to the January 2006 article for full details on this new policy. A copy of the Network Bulletin is available for viewing online in the Newsstand at www.unitedhealthcareonline.com).

The reduction percentage described in the article was based on the understanding that the CMS policy implemented in January 2006 would apply the reduction only to the practice expense RVU's for the technical component. UnitedHealthcare has received confirmation from CMS that the reduction has been applied to the total RVU's for the technical component. As such, UnitedHealthcare will be implementing a 50% reduction percentage to the technical component (when applicable) with the June 2006 implementation of this policy.

Multiple imaging reduction payments will be applied only to claims submitted on HCFA 1500 claim forms. This payment policy is not intended for imaging procedures performed in an inpatient or hospital setting and billed on a UB92 claim form.

Multiple Imaging Reduction Policy Clarification
Page 7 of the January Network Bulletin indicated, when a physician bills globally for two or more procedures within one diagnostic imaging family for a single patient session, those procedures will be divided into a professional component (PC) and technical component (TC) using UnitedHealthcare's standard professional technical splits. This notice is to clarify that this refers to the billed charges submitted for the global service. These billed charges will be split on separate lines for the professional and technical component, using UnitedHealthcare's standard professional technical splits. This is necessary since the professional component is not subject to a multiple imaging reduction. Both lines will then be reimbursed at the lesser of billed versus UnitedHealthcare contracted rates with the professional/technical reduction and imaging reduction applied, as appropriate.
